Optimum Mobile App

Starting from Scratch

Role: UX Designer

Duration: 2 Months

Tools: Figma, Adoble Illustrator

Starting to exercise is hard. Starting as someone who never lifted weights can be harder. As a beginner in the gym, I found it difficult to know where to start. To bridge this gap, I envisioned an app that enhances accessibility to essential resources, including trainers, instructional videos, and progress tracking. This tool would serve as a guide, helping users navigate their fitness journey with confidence and direction.

To begin my process, I conducted informal research at my local gym, asking a simple yet impactful question: “How can I make going to the gym easier for you?” The responses varied, ranging from better equipment to increased access to trainers. As I gathered feedback from 10 participants, a common theme emerged—people wanted more knowledge. They wanted to understand their gym better, learn which exercises would yield the best results, and discover ways to improve their workouts. From this insight, Optimum was born.

Testing the Idea

After developing the wireframes and high-fidelity mockups, I brought the designs back to the gym for feedback. I asked users about the app’s effectiveness, its purpose, and any usability or functionality concerns they had. A key issue that emerged was gym availability during peak hours—many users struggled with limited time and found it frustrating when equipment was occupied. This obstacle highlighted a crucial pain point in their fitness journey, reinforcing the need for features that could help optimize their gym experience.

Optimizing the Design

After identifying this pain point, I revisited the design to implement new features and improve navigation. In contrast to the initial version, the updated design includes real-time notifications, keeping users informed about gym updates and announcements. To tackle overcrowding during peak hours, I introduced a reservation system that allows users to book equipment in advance. This feature includes a cap on the number and duration of reservations to ensure fair access for multiple users, ultimately enhancing the gym experience for everyone.

Conclusion

While Optimum is not a real app, the insights gathered and the feedback from users were genuine. The challenges and needs identified during this process highlight real obstacles that many gym-goers face. By addressing these concerns through thoughtful design solutions, we hope that features like real-time updates and equipment reservations could enhance the gym experience. Ultimately, our goal is to support users in their fitness journey, helping them train more effectively and achieve greater strength.
